I operated on a scared Lucio Parra on Tuesday the 26th. Prior to surgery he wrote this letter to our team. This letter is so special. It shows the warm heart of 7 year old boy who just wants to be like every other kid. It was an honor to help him be that way...

26 of January 2010, Quito Ecuador
From the hand of Lucio Renan Parra:

I am from the city of Puyo, wishing for all of you specialists lots of wisdom . and that God give you all lots of blessings so that all the operations performed by your medical team turn out well.   All the children of the world want you to help us to be as happy as the rest of the  kids.

Friends, we want you to return to continue performing surgeries on the children that need them so badly.

I wish a  pleasant and happy voyage to all the medical team and, from my part, Lucio Parra, I send you many happy greetings to you and your children and pray to God that your children will have the wisdom and sensitivity that you have shown us, and therefore, God will bless all of you and your families.

With many thanks, I beg your leave,

Thank you, Lucio Parra  (age 7)

Gracias,

Atentamente,

Lucio Parra, age 7

Patient screening day.
We had a full day of work screening patients, scheduling and setting up the ORs for this week's upcoming surgeries. We left the hotel at 730 am and returned at 5 pm. Well over a hundred patients were seen. We saw many new patients as well as many patients from our previous missions. I received a hug and warm greeting from the mother of a cute 8 year old girl with a repaired cleft lip and palate. It turns out that I did her surgery 8 years ago during my very 1st mission. It was nice to be remembered and great to see how she has grown. I feel very priviledged that I was able to have a positive impact on this patient. She will need another surgery on her nose when she is 15.
Tomorrow we have 9 palate repairs and 3 cleft lip repairs scheduled. The bus leaves at 6:30 am Should be a great day.

For much of her 39 years, the woman hid behind a scarf and could not bear to see herself in the mirror. She kept her gaze down, her eyes averting those of the doctor who came from afar to help her smile.
